It has been a very, very long time since I have posted, so I will tell you a little about what I have been doing work/play wise. But the main point of this post is that I am leaving in less than 2 weeks, and I am starting to feel sad, and contemplating the things I will miss most about living in the big apple.
So for the past month, I have been working. A lot. We have had less "fun activities" at work, and have been spending the majority of our time in the office. I recently moved from Jefferies to The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation. This business clears every security that is bought/sold/traded in the NYSE. There is a vault in the basement that holds $28 trillion dollars of securities. Its crazy to think that those are just the paper securities, and there are so many more that are electronic. It gives me a little more insight as to why the stock market is such a big deal. My parents don't invest, so I never really understood the magnitude.
Anywho, at DTCC I am working in a basement that is always freezing cold. I also have to go through airport security everyday, so that kind of sucks. The security people know me by now, though, so they try to make it pretty easy for me.
Even though I have been working a ton lately, I have also been having a lot of fun. I have been spending a lot of time with a good friend, Catherine. I have been to Long Island to visit her at her country club, we went to a vegan restaurant in the city (my first time and I LOVED it), and this week we are going out. I have also been hanging out with other work friends at various happy hours and sporting events like Mets and Yankees games.
Just about every weekend, I go shopping. I know, its a bad habit. But there is so much in NYC to explore shopping wise. I have been to a ton of cute boutiques, bloomingdales, nordstrom, and many many other stores. I end up buying something every weekend, but I usually try to limit my spending.
With all the stuff I'm doing, weekends can be pretty busy.
But enough with the stories, here are the things I will miss most about the city (not in any order):
1. My apartment. If you've seen the post with pictures, you know it is small. But I love it. I feel so independent living here, and I will definitely miss that. I love that I can keep it clean and organized just the way I like it. I feel like this place is all mine, and I don't want anyone else to live here ever.
2. My neighborhood. I am so close to everything in the city. Literally a 15 minute train ride from just about any spot.
3. Times Square. Even though I try to avoid this area, its still so awesome that I can see the edge of it from the corner of 7th Avenue, right next to my apartment building. I feel like it is such a defining area of the city, and I love that you can always see something crazy there.
4. Work. Even though I am always saying I don't want to go, I would definitely rather go to work than go to school. I will miss being around the fun people I work with, and hope I get to see them if I am invited back for a full time position.
5. Taking the subway. Even though its so hot on the platform, I love not driving. Its so nice to be able to have that time to relax on the way to work.
6. Being able to walk everywhere. I love the freedom that brings. Its so cool that in 15 minutes I can walk to times square or penn station. I could even walk to work if I wanted, but its way too hot for that.
7. Whole Foods. My favorite place. They have the best vegan chocolate cake. It sounds gross but it is soo good. And the prices there aren't really that bad.
8. Friends that I have made. I have met so many interesting and fun people through work, and I hope that I'm able to keep in touch with all of them.
9. Salad Places. NYC has sooo many restaurants just for salad. And they are all soo good. I don't know a city in the south where you can be on any street corner and find a place for a really awesome salad.
10. Central Park. It isn't a place that I go often, but every time I am there I don't even feel like I am in the middle of a city.
Thats all that I can think of for now, but I'm sure there will be more things that I miss when I am back home.
